Betsy was born in Atlanta and attended Atlanta city schools before earning her Psychology degree from UGA in 1960. While in college, Betsy was Miss Atlanta 1957 and Miss UGA 1958. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and Kappa Sigma Sweetheart. In 1959 she married Don Leebern, Jr. and they had two children- Don Leebern III and Gantt Leebern Shadburn. Betsy has 5 grandchildren who she enjoys spending much time with- Don IV, Lily, Lawson, Christopher and Nicholas.
Betsy is a Trustee Emeritus of the UGA Foundation, State Botanical Garden of Georgia, Brookstone School and Columbus Museum. She is a current River Center board member and member of Trinity Episcopal Church. In her spare time Betsy enjoys tennis, NASCAR, gardening, helping the PAWS Humane Society, spending time in Crested Butte, CO and Sea Crest, FL, her three Boykin Spaniels- Bourbon, Scotch and Brandy and her 10 cats.
Betsy is looking forward to dancing in the Dancing Stars of Columbus Memory Gala.
