Join me in my efforts to support Alzheimer's Association Georgia Chapter!
Kay was born in Columbus, GA and has lived here all her life. She grew up in the Clubview neighborhood and was able to walk (sometimes dance) her way to higher education. After graduating from hardaway HS she attended Columbus State University and graduated with a BA in Psychology. Years later, after her youngest son went to college, she returned to CSU to earn her Masters of Science in Psychotherapeutic Counseling.
Kay is married to Richard Saunders and is the mother of two sons, Vaden and Charlie. She is the daughter of Katherine and Charles Wike and has one sister, Evelyn Riley and one brother, Chuck.
Kay enjoys outdoor activities such as snow and water skiing and can be found at Lake Harding Backwaters almost all summer. She tries to play bridge (not very well) and loves to garden. Traveling has become a passion for her, visiting other countries to learn about different cultures and gain perspective of how other people live. One of life goals is to speak French fluently. Another dream fo Kay's has been to dance "like my feet have wings". Both of these are accomplichments she has yet to achieve. She notes that she did not take dance lessons as a child because she had to wear braces on her legs to straighten her feet. She was secretly envious of her older sister going to dance class and all the cool costumes she got to wear! She still isn't over that!
Kay's grandmother had Alzheimer's disease so she knows first hand the effects the disease has on individulas as well as their families. For the past 6 years Kay has worked at The Bradley Center as coordinator of the Oasis Adult Respite Program. This day program provides care and activities for those living with Alzheimer's disease, depression and other age related dementias. She also provides training and education for professionals working with senior adults and has presented at the National Alzheimer Care Conference in 2008. She has worked with the local Alzheimer's Associaion Board to raise money for the Memory Walk by serving as Team Captain for the St. Francis Hospital and The Bradley Center.
By participating in the "Dancing Stars of Columbus Memory Gala" event Kay hopes to help raise awareness as well as money for the Alzheimer's Association. She believes the more people know and understand what the Association does, the more they will support our efforts. So Kay is "dancing for dollars" and hopes to tap into community support so we can waltz away with a successful show.
